South of San Clemente is my favorite place to paint, on the edge of Orange and San Diego Counties. It's the San Mateo Valley, most recently the site of a farm and farm fields, and currently one of the training areas for the United States Marine Corps. The valley is beautiful at all times of day, sitting just at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. At one time the creek ran full through the valley, where the Acjachemen native people lived, hunted, fished, and even were buried. The burial ground is still there along the creek today. Hiking trails and a camp ground sit nearby. The stillness and peace of hundreds of years is still in this place.
