Rick J. Delanty creates original California coastal paintings in oil and acrylic, inspired by the movement, atmosphere, light, and changing character of the Pacific coast. Working both plein air and in the studio, Rick approaches the coastline as both a recognizable place and a source of abstraction, color, and movement.
His coastal work reflects a long-standing fascination with moving water and the visual energy of the California shoreline. From quiet ocean scenes to more active surf and coastal landscapes, these paintings explore the relationship between land, sea, light, and atmosphere.
Painting the Movement and Character of the California Coast
Moving water is a recurring theme in many of my oil and acrylic paintings, acting as a liquid counterpoint to the landscape and sometimes becoming part of the landscape itself. I also see coastal subjects as opportunities to explore abstraction and paint movement while creating work that still feels alive and connected to place.
For me, the California coast is a subject for frequent study, both plein air and in the studio. These smaller studies often become the foundation for larger coastal and seascape paintings.
My coastal paintings have been exhibited in shows presented by organizations including Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, the California Art Club, and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
Coastal Landscapes Inspired by Southern California
Rick's coastal paintings are strongly influenced by the scenery of Southern California and the communities surrounding his San Clemente studio. The beaches, bluffs, coves, surf, changing skies, and coastal light of Orange County provide a continuing source of inspiration.
Many of these subjects connect naturally to Rick's broader collection of South Orange County landscape paintings, which includes scenes influenced by San Clemente, Trestles Beach, San Onofre State Park, and other familiar coastal locations.
Original Coastal Paintings for Collectors
Rick's coastal work includes original oil and acrylic paintings created for collectors who connect with the beauty, movement, and atmosphere of the California coast.
Some collectors are drawn to specific Southern California locations, while others respond to the broader feeling of water, light, and landscape found throughout Rick's coastal work.
